"Monster Hunt 2" breaks opening day record in China

22 Feb – Step aside, "Wolf Warrior 2". Another movie has broken the Chinese opening day record and it turns out to be the sequel to the original record holder, "Monster Hunt 2".

As reported on Phoenix, the Raman Hui movie which opened on the Lunar New Year, grossed over RMB 603 million (USD 95.7 million) at 10pm of 16 February, eclipsing the Wu Jing action movie's previous record.

The sequel did better than the original, which was released in 2015 - even though its predecessor also broke the record to become (then) the highest-grossing film of all time.

The first "Monster Hunt" film was soon surpassed by Stephen Chow's "The Mermaid", and later "Wolf Warrior 2".

The sequel stars original cast members Bai Baihe and Jing Boran, with an addition of Hong Kong top star Tony Leung Chiu Wai.
