Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 will no longer be shot at the same time, according to reports.

Per Deadline, it appears that scheduling has now got in the way of the plans, with Tom Cruise soon being needed on promotional duties for the forthcoming Tom Gun: Maverick.

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 action classic is due out in July this year, meaning that Cruise will be out of action.

It's thought that the filming of Mission: Impossible 8 will commence soon after, however.

Director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that the movie has now wrapped filming in the UAE, and will head back to London to add 'a few finishing touches'.

“All aboard for our greatest challenge yet,” he added.

The filming of Mission: Impossible 7 – so far unsuffixed – has been something of a rocky road.

It was the first major movie to suspend production, after it found itself in the epicentre of the COVID pandemic spread in Europe, while filming in Venice last February.

Production eventually started up again in July at Leavesden, before moving to Møre og Romsdal, in Norway, where Cruise performed a death-defying stunt riding a motorbike off a cliff, before releasing a parachute.

Filming also took place in Rome, and hit headlines in December in London, when audio of Cruise berating crew for not standing two metres apart leaked from the set.

The movie is due for release on 19 November, 2021.
