Mission: Impossible 6 Delayed Over Tom Cruise Pay Dispute

It looks as though Tom Cruise might not choose to accept his sixth mission for the IMF.

Although ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ had been scheduled to start production in January 2017, pre-production has been halted on the blockbuster sequel because of disagreements between Cruise and studio Paramount over the actor/producer’s payment package.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “one of the contentious points is Cruise’s back-end profit participation, with the actor looking to match or exceed what he is getting paid by Universal for starring in ‘The Mummy,’ which he is currently shooting in London.”

Cruise is reported to have received both an up-front fee and a percentage of the gross profits on all five ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies, and the series is estimated to have earned him upwards of $300 million to date.

This is the second stumbling block for ‘Mission: Impossible 6,’ which had originally been scheduled to start production in November of this year, but was pushed back over reported script problems.

54-year old Cruise has been the one constant throughout the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie series, producing and playing superspy Ethan Hunt in every installment since the 1996 original, based on the 1960s TV show.

‘Mission: Impossible 6’ will be the first entry in the series to see a director return for a second go, as ‘Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation’ director Christopher McQuarrie will once again call the shots. (The first four films were directed by Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird respectively).

It is also anticipated that Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Ferguson will reprise their roles as IMF agents William Brandt and Ilsa Faust, though there does not appear to be any confirmation yet as to whether or not Simon Pegg (a series regular since ‘Mission: Impossible 3′) will be back as tech guy Benji.

Even if Ethan Hunt’s next mission proves that bit too impossible, the year ahead will still be busy for Cruise, as he has ‘Jack Reacher: Never Look Back,’ ‘American Made’ and of course ‘The Mummy’ on the way.

No release date or official title for the sixth ‘Mission: Impossible’ have yet been announced.
