26 Aug – After 33 years, former Miss Hong Kong 1987 contestant Huang Ying has finally spoken up and addressed allegations that she had caused the withdrawal of former actress Chingmy Yau from the pageant, as reported on Mingpao.
Back in 1987, just when Chingmy was named the hot favourite to win the pageant, rumours of her having plastic surgery suddenly came out in the tabloids. Since such procedure was considered taboo at the time, Chingmy suddenly withdrew from the pageant citing health reasons.
Huang, who spoke to fellow pageant alumna Wing Lam on her online show recently, shared that she was shocked at the time - when a magazine claimed that she was the one who leaked the news, especially since she was not aware at all about the issue.
"Why would I say that? I didn't even know about it, so how was I supposed to leak the news to the media?" she said, adding that she ignored the rumours as she thought it was ridiculous. However, she subsequently realised how serious it was when her cousin called her and asked her to clarify it.
Huang also stated that many people misunderstood her relationship with Chingmy because of the tabloids, thinking that she was the jealous best friend who wanted to oust the other party.
If there was one thing she regretted, it would be the fact that she didn't clarify the situation in the past, adding that she is thankful that Wing gave her the opportunity to share her side of the story.
"I don't know if [Chingmy] still has the misunderstanding, but I hope that she will be relieved after seeing this programme," she added.
