Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson to Star in Late-Night Talk Show Film (EXCLUSIVE)

In what is sure to become one of the hottest packages in town, Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson are set to star in an untitled movie Kaling also wrote revolving around a veteran late-night talk show host.

Scott Rudin will produce with Kaling and Howard Klein.

The story follows a venerated late-night talk show host, played by Thompson, who’s in danger of losing her long-running show right when she hires her first female writer, played by Kaling. Sources describe the film as “The Devil Wears Prada” meets “Broadcast News.”

No studio is currently attached, but sources say a bidding war for the package is expected to be heated with several bidders already in the mix.

Kaling has quickly become one of the biggest triple threats in the world of comedy. She is creator, writer, and star of “The Mindy Project,” which aired for three seasons on Fox before heading over to Hulu, where its fifth season is about to premiere.

She is also attached to the “Ocean’s Eleven” reboot “Ocean’s Eight,” starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, and is set to play “Mrs. Who” in Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time.” She is repped by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Thompson is a multi-hyphenate herself, having won an Oscar for her 1995 adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility,” which she also toplined. Thompson was most recently seen in “Bridget Jones’s Baby” and will voice Mrs. Potts in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” She is repped by Hamilton Hodell and CAA.

Rudin is expected to have another busy awards season with “Fences,” which he also produced on Broadway, bowing in December. Original stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis return for the movie adaptation. He is also in pre-production on the Showtime series “Purity” starring Daniel Craig.
