"Mindanao" to represent PH at the 2021 Oscars

25 Nov – The Philippines has recently chosen its representative film to the 93rd Academy Awards - the Brillante Mendoza film, "Mindanao".

The announcement was made by the Director-General of the Film Academy of the Philippines, Vivian Velez on FAP's official Facebook account on 24 November.

The statement read, "We are pleased to announce the selection of the feature film, "Mindanao," as the Philippines' official entry to the 93rd OSCARS International Feature Film category. Mindanao won best picture in the most recent Metro Manila Film Festival and featured Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon as the lead actors, directed by Brillante Mendoza. Congratulations and best wishes!"

The movie stars Judy Ann Santos as Salma, a Muslim woman and mother to a child with cancer who awaits her husband (Allen Dizon) to come home after serving as a combat medic deployed in the Southern Philippines.

Santos, who won Best Actress at the 41st Cairo International Film Festival, 45th Metro Manila Film Festival, 18th Gawad Tanglaw and 22nd Gawad Pasado for her role in the movie, also took to social media to express her happiness with the news, writing, "Sooo much to be grateful for... Congratulations team Mindanao!"
