Mina Starsiak Hawk Confesses That There’s Severe Tension Between Her and Her Mom
Mina Starsiak Hawk is opening up about her relationship with her family. The HGTV star revealed that she’s currently not in a great place with her mom and Good Bones co-star Karen E. Laine and her brothers.
During a new episode of her podcast Mina AF, the home reno expert shared that her son Jack’s fifth birthday party is the latest event that caused her to reflect on her familial ties. She said that her family is “challenging,” which is why she struggled with who to invite to the party this year. She went on to give insight into the perpetual conversation she has with herself that attempts to answer: “How do we approach complicated family dynamics?”
Each member of her family has a different level of complication or simplicity, as she put it. She then described the current state of affairs: “My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are kind of like in a nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
She then stated that they always coexist. “We went on family vacation together and everyone is pleasant enough around each other,” she said. “And is that the good thing, the right thing, or is that all just being wildly dysfunctional and pretending we don’t want to be around each other?”
When it comes to her mom, Starsiak Hawk has made it clear that her children aren’t “off limits,” meaning she’s welcome to spend time with them despite the tension in their relationship. The same goes for her brothers if they wanted to.
Starsiak Hawk then specified that the family always comes together—despite the awkwardness—for family vacations, holidays, and other events that are important to her dad. “We all act nice and like normal adult humans because this is an important thing for a handful of different people,” she said. “I think at the top of that list is my dad.”
She continued, “Whenever there’s an event, we all put our big kid pants on and pretend to be nice to each other and do the event, and then go back to our corners of the universe and talk s--- about each other.”
She confessed that she doesn't want to continue living that way because it doesn’t feel genuine or real. “It’s just not what I want my life to be,” she said.
It's likely, she noted, that no one is happy with the current state of things. “I do know if we all keep doing the same thing, it’s going to keep being the same,” she said. “And I don’t think any of us are happy with it being the same.”
Starsiak Hawk isn't sure who is going to be the one to start making changes. If she does, she admits that she might be seen as the bad guy. She thinks that's okay, seeing as things likely can't get any worse. But she doesn't want to hurt people or herself in the process. She ended the episode with what she knows for certain. "I do firmly believe that nothing happens until the pain of change is less than the pain of staying the same," she said. "And the pain of staying the same right now is pretty cruddy, so maybe it's time to change."
