2013 Miley Cyrus and 2017 Miley Cyrus look preeeetty different from the outside. The “Malibu” singer has traded her pixie cut, leotards, and twerking for grown-in roots, cut-offs, and political activism. We love Miley in any state, but these days she seems much more comfortable in her own skin.

During a recent interview, she was asked how she deals with the dissonance between these two seemingly different personas while still feeling like she was and is being herself.

Tbh, we’re loving her response.

While sitting down with 103.5 KTU near New York City, her interviewer, Hollywood Hamilton says, “I was expecting a unicorn onesie or something like that.”

Miley explains:

“This is my new vibe. It feels very weird when your main thing is you preach is ‘be yourself,’ but then you feel like you’re not being yourself anymore. So this is as bland as I can be and just kinda be more my own self than to hide as a unicorn.”

Hamilton then asks her if her behavior and persona circa Bangerz was a phase, to which she responds, “I think everything I do isn’t really a phase, it’s just the, you know, it may be the time in your life.”

We LOVE this. Who doesn’t look back on their past and cringe a little even though the person we were at the moment felt true at the time? Miley, in spirit, doesn’t really seem all that different from 2013. We like that she’s being kind to her past self.

Like her 2007 hit song, “See You Again,” says, “She’s just being Miley”.

According to Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s new album is just about as “Miley” as her music has ever been. He told Billboard, “This is Miley leaning into her roots more than I’ve ever heard,” he says. “For her, this is honest.”

We can’t wait to hear more of her new album! Keep doing you, Miley!
