Miley Cyrus has unveiled a new snake tattoo inspired by her recent trip to Italy with rumoured girlfriend Kaitlynn Carter.

Earlier this month, the Wrecking Ball singer announced she had split from actor Liam Hemsworth after seven months of marriage and headed on vacation to Lake Como with model and blogger Kaitlynn.

Now, Miley has added a new piece of body art to her left forearm, and Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Brian Woo, better known as Dr. Woo, has shared an image of the inking - of a snake eating a man - on Instagram.

"Cool old sculpture @mileycyrus found in Italy," he wrote alongside a snap of the tattoo, which features the serpent from the Visconti coat of arms - the official symbol of the city of Milan.

Miley, 26, previously turned to Dr. Woo for a tattoo of Australian snack Vegemite, with the design a tribute to Liam.

The Independence Day: Resurgence star filed for divorce on Wednesday, putting an end to any speculation that the couple will reunite.

Liam, 29, cited "irreconcilable differences" for the breakup in documents filed by top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, and the paperwork, obtained by TMZ, does not list a date of separation.

Meanwhile, Kaitlynn's ex-husband Brody Jenner has taken to social media to share details about the gift he received from his former partner and Miley.

The pair had sent him a collection of cannabis items and a "weed bouquet" for The Hills star's 36th birthday on Wednesday.

"Miley and Kaitlynn, you guys really stepped it up on this one... We got the birthday card attached to the weed bouquet, look at this! I have never seen one of these in my entire life. Happy birthday to me!" Brody stated on his Instagram Stories.
