Miley Cyrus debuted a poignant new tattoo as she performed for the first time since her split from husband Liam Hemsworth at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday.
The 26-year-old took to the stage at the ceremony at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, to perform her new ballad Slide Away, and showcased her new inking on her left bicep. The tattoo, a lyric from the Pixies' song The Thing, reads: "My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free", and was etched on Miley by celebrity tattoo artist Winter Stone.
The newly-single singer opted for a simple outfit of a little black dress as she performed her powerful ballad, with wet-look hair and a black and white filter on the camera adding to the moody nature of the rendition.
In the tune, which is rumoured to be based on her relationship with Liam, Miley sings: "Move on, we're not 17 / I'm not who I used to be / You said that everything changed / You're right I'm grown now."
Amid rumours that Liam's alleged drinking and drug use had contributed to their split, another line saw Miley croon: "I want my house in the hills / Don't want the whiskey and pills / I don't give up easily / But I don't think I'm down."
Following her split from Liam, Miley has been seen growing close to Kaitlynn Carter - the ex of Brody Jenner - with pictures of the pair kissing during a holiday in Italy emerging just as the end of the marriage was announced.
Kaitlynn was also on hand to support Miley at the VMAs, and the pair were pictured arriving at an after-party at Up&Down nightclub in Manhattan hand-in-hand later in the evening.
