SINGAPORE — The Obamas will be in town at the same time in December to speak at two separate events – Michelle will talk about her book Becoming, while Barack will share his thoughts on leadership.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will be sharing her experiences from her book Becoming on stage at Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday (14 December). The event entitled ‘An Evening with Michelle Obama’ will explore the moments, both public and private, that have shaped the former First Lady’s life. The event will be organised by business events provider The Growth Faculty.

Michelle, the wife of former US president Barack Obama, is the first African-American to serve as First Lady. She helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world.

At “An Evening with Michelle Obama”, Michelle will speak about her time growing up in the South Side of Chicago, her time as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, as well as highlights from the eight transformative years she served as First Lady of the United States of America.

In 2018, Michelle published her memoir, Becoming, which sold more copies than any other book published in the United States in 2018, achieving that status in just 15 days and instantly rising to the #1 slot on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

An announcement was also made yesterday (8 October) that another book will be published as a companion journal to her bestselling memoir. Penguin Random House will publish a first run of 500,000 copies of Becoming: A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice. The press release says that the journal “includes more than 150 inspiring questions and quotes that resonate with key themes in Mrs. Obama’s memoir and that are designed to help readers reflect on their personal and family history, their goals, challenges, and dreams, what moves them and brings them hope, and what future they imagine for themselves and their community.” Perhaps we may be fortunate enough to hear snippets from her new book on stage too.

Michelle’s husband, the former 44th president of USA, Barack Obama will also be in town to speak at another event on 16 December, “In Conversation with Barack Obama”. He will share remarks on his time in office and his thoughts on leadership in the world.
