It looks as though the cast for ‘Deadpool 2’ is one step closer to being confirmed, because just a few days after it was announced that ‘Atlanta’s’ Zazie Beetz has been cast as Domino it has now emerged that Michael Shannon is the frontrunner to play Cable.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have alleged that the Academy Award nominated actor is currently leading the shortlist for the role, which also includes ‘Stranger Things’s’ David Harbour.

The casting of Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’ has been quite a contentious issue. In fact, it’s even believed to have been the main reason why Tim Miller, who oversaw its hugely successful predecessor, left the sequel, as he repeatedly butted heads with Ryan Reynolds over who should play the character. Miller was ultimately replaced by ‘John Wick’s’ David Leitch.

If Michael Shannon decides to take on the role of Cable then it would be his third comic-book movie, as he previously appeared in both ‘Jonah Hex’ and ‘Man Of Steel’.

As well as these roles, Shannon has received two Academy Award For Best Supporting Actor nominations for his work on ‘Revolutionary Road’ and ‘Nocturnal Animals’, while he’s also appeared in ‘Mud’, ‘Midnight Special’, ‘Mud’, ‘99 Homes’, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’.

‘Deadpool 2’ is set to shoot this summer, but we’re still waiting on an official release date.
