It looks like Michael Bay’s ‘Lobo’ movie starring The Rock won't happen

It seems like only yesterday, but it’s been a full decade since Guy Ritchie was announced as director of Warner Brothers’ Lobo movie.

In those pre-Deadpool days, it was going to be a family friendly blockbuster with a PG rating - an unusual move for one of the most violent antiheroes in comics.

Since 2009, directors have come and gone. Brad Peyton was attached at one point, with the most recent name linked to the film being the (slightly surprising) Michael Bay.

Perhaps that’s because Warner Brothers’ wishlist star The Rock was happy to work with both (Peyton on Journey 2, Bay on Pain & Gain)

However, with today’s announcement that SyFy will be launching a spin-off Lobo series (the character is about to appear in Superman series Krypton), it looks like the movie version is finally dead in the water.

Warner Brothers / DC are fairly notorious for keeping their TV and movie universes as separate as possible. When the Suicide Squad movie was greenlit, the company took extreme measures in the television universe. Arrow already had Deadshot and Amanda Waller, and they were both killed off.

"When DC found out they were going to be doing their own movie we had to axe all of the characters before we even got to show them,” Willa Holland said at the time.

An official Lobo show basically means WB have no plans to make the movie. Instead, we’ll see The Rock as Black Adam in a Shazam! spin-off. As for Michael Bay, he’s working on 6 Underground, a crime thriller, for Netflix.

Perhaps it’s for the best, Lobo’s a complex character to get right. Originally created as a villainous spoof of Wolverine and The Punisher, Lobo became such a fan favourite he was twisted into an uber-violent hero so horrible he once killed Santa Claus.

A long-form series will be able to explore the character on a deeper level. It’s certainly a better move than a PG take on The Main Man.
