Meryll Soriano refuses to pit herself against Judy Ann Santos

10 Dec – Meryll Soriano would rather not have people pitting her against other actresses when it comes to awards, following predictions that either she or Judy Ann Santos may win Best Actress at the Metro Manila Film Festival 2019.

As reported on Inquirer, the actress, who was asked about her chances against Santos, who has won similar accolade for her role in "Mindanao" at the 4th Cairo International Film Festival recently, stated that they are all friends in the entertainment industry and would rather support each other.

"I hope people will not turn this into a big issue. I've never been too conscious about winning awards. I'm lucky to have been recognised for the work I do, but really, you forget that once you start a new project," she said.

At the same time, Soriano also acknowledged the fact that one is not guaranteed a win at the MMFF just because one won an international award.

"From what I've noticed when attending different film festivals, the reception to a movie differs depending on the crowd and the culture of the host country. [For example], our film "Donor" had a more rousing reception in Brussels than when we screened it in Marrakech, Morocco," she said.
