Meryl Streep to chair and attend Met Gala for first time

Meryl Streep has been named alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emma Stone as a chair of the 2020 Met Gala.

The three-time Oscar-winner has surprisingly never attended the fashion event, which next year will celebrate New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's 150th anniversary, and will have a theme of About Time: Fashion and Duration.

Streep will do so alongside Miranda, Stone, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere, and Vogue U.S. editor Anna Wintour - who Streep famously played a fictionalised version of in 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada.

Past stars to have chaired the gala include Harry Styles, Rihanna, Amal Clooney, Serena Williams, Cate Blanchett, and Nicole Kidman.

Explaining next year's theme, Andrew Bolton, the head of the museum's Costume Institute, told Vogue that he was inspired by Virginia Woolf's time-travelling novel Orlando and a 1992 Sally Potter film adaptation.

The gala will be held on 4 May, with the About Time: Fashion and Duration show running from 7 May until 7 September 2020.
