Mel Gibson To Present Award At Golden Globes... And People Are Outraged

It would appear that Mel Gibson’s period of penance is far from over, following the announcement that he’s to present a Golden Globe at this Sunday’s ceremony.

Movie fans took to Twitter and other social media to voice their disdain, following the announcement by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body behind the awards show.

“Breaking! We’re delighted to announce @oliviawilde and Mel Gibson as presenters at this Sunday’s #GoldenGlobes!” read the tweet.

But it wasn’t long before the ire began flooding in.

User Patricia Barraclough added: “And in what is turning out to be a top week for women - another slap in the face.”

While another was a shade more blunt, proffering: “Mel f***ing Gibson? You guys must be out of your minds.”

Globes presenter Ricky Gervais appeared to rejoice at the news, tweeting:

He later added: “Too easy, in fact.”

Gervais has got form with the troubled Australian actor.

When he presented the awards in 2010, he quipped as he introduced Gibson to the stage: “I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the next man in Mel Gibson.”

As well as the accusations of anti-semitism, recordings of phone conversations with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, also leaked in 2010, found him using vile racial and homophobic language.

There were also allegations of domestic violence during their tempestuous relationship.

Since the various controversies, Gibson, a two-time Oscar winner, has seen himself become persona non grata in Hollywood.

He’s taken small roles in movies like ‘The Expendables 3’ and 'Machete Kills’, and was supported by friend Jodie Foster in 2011, who cast him as the lead in her offbeat drama 'The Beaver’, though it was a catastrophic flop at the box office.

Lately, he’s been beating a path behind the camera instead, with Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving and Vince Vaughn set to star in his forthcoming war drama 'Hacksaw Ridge’, set during World War II.

The Golden Globes happens this Sunday night in Los Angeles.
