Mel Gibson’s ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Tops AACTA Awards Nominations

Mel Gibson’s yet-to-be released war movie “Hacksaw Ridge” added to its Oscars credentials by scooping the largest number of nominations for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.

The film, which releases in Australia on Nov 3 and in the U.S. on Nov. 4 earned a total of 13 nominations across performance and technical categories, and including best picture. “The Daughter” was its closest competitor with 10 nominations.

The film, about an American conscientious objector and medic Desmond Doss caught up in the WWII battle lines in Okinawa, was predominantly filmed in New South Wales, Australia.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Sydney on Dec. 7.
