Why Meghan Markle is 'seen as more of a celebrity than a royal'

The Duchess of Sussex is still seen as more of a celebrity than as a member of the Royal Family by some, says a PR expert.

Former American actress Meghan shot to fame on US legal drama Suits, playing paralegal Rachel Zane. While she had other television and film roles before that, she stayed on the show for seven seasons, making her exit after her engagement with Prince Harry was announced in November 2017.

While Meghan is used to being on the red carpet and in the public eye, her marriage to Harry reached global interest.

PR expert Nick Ede tells Yahoo UK‘s The Royal Box: “She is still seen as a celebrity, she is not, obviously she is royalty, but she is more seen as a celebrity, so people feel like they have that opportunity to criticise her.

“They feel that they kind of know her more because they have read about her in The Tig.”

Meghan founded her lifestyle website The Tig in 2014, where she shared fashion and beauty tips, recipes and travel advice, but also snippets about her personal life – such as the sweet nickname her mother Doria Ragland calls her.

Ede adds: “What was in it was lots of her admitting lots of her faults, talking to other people about their vulnerabilities and what it’s like being a woman in Hollywood, that’s why she’s still seen as a celebrity rather than a member of the royal family.”

Meghan closed down the website in April 2017, but left a sweet farewell message for her fans on the homepage.
