Oprah spoke to CBS This Morning about her interview with Meghan and Harry, elaborating on the duchess’s revelation that there was racist “concern” from an undisclosed member of the royal family during her pregnancy about “how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he’s born.” Oprah said that Harry told her “it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather,” again confirming that “neither his grandmother nor grandfather were part of those conversations.”

Meghan Markle has opened up to Oprah about the racism she experienced while living in England. Specifically, the duchess revealed that there was racist “concern” from some members of the royal family about her pregnancy and “how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he’s born.”

“In those months, when I was pregnant, all around this same time, we had in tandem the conversation of ‘he won’t be given security; he won’t be given a title’…and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin will be when he’s born,” said Meghan. “That was relayed to me from Harry, that was from conversations that family had with him. It was really hard to see those as compartmentalized conversations.”

This is obviously horrifying, and whoever said this to Harry should be ashamed. Oprah actually asked Meghan if she’d reveal who said this to Harry, but she responded, “I think that would be very damaging to them.”

According to Meghan, the palace also informed the couple that Archie—and the first mixed-race great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II—would not be provided private security from the palace.

Over the years, Meghan has had to endure racist attacks in British tabloids as well as on social media. The fact that the royal family was also making racist comments about Meghan’s baby while she was pregnant is simply horrifying.
