Meghan and Harry receive warm welcome during first Sussex visit as Duke and Duchess

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had a busy day of engagements during their first official visit to Sussex, their county namesake.

Their first port of call on Wednesday morning was in Chichester, where the couple greeted locals who’d gathered to see them during a walkabout.

Meghan wore a cream Armani coat with a dark green shirt from & Other Stories and a matching leather skirt by Hugo Boss.

She was given an A-Z of Sussex by children from Westbourne House School, who asked her to come back and see them soon.

One pupil revealed to Harry that they were missing double Latin to come out and see him and Meghan.

The Duke high-fived him and said: ‘The fact that you got off double Latin because we are here. I think that’s fantastic.’

He added : ‘Although education is important!’

The royal couple started their day by visiting Edes House, where they were shown the rare Sussex copy of the American Declaration of Independence.

The Sussex Declaration is one of only two contemporary handwritten ceremonial manuscript copies, the other being the signed copy housed in the National Archives in Washington D.C.

Meghan and Harry then travelled along the coast to Bognor Regis where they officially opened the University of Chichester’s Engineering and Digital Technology Park.

In Brighton, Meghan and Harry arrived to huge cheers and stopped to chat with locals, who chanted their names, during their second walkabout, who chanted their names.

Before heading into the Royal Pavilion, they were met by some very excited children from Queen’s Park School, who could barely contain their glee while chatting to royalty.

The year 4 pupils, aged eight to nine, asked Meghan what her favourite subject at school was. The Duchess revealed it was maths.

The inquisitive youngsters also asked Meghan, 37, how old she was but the Duchess didn’t seem fazed by their questions and asked them to guess “higher” and “lower.”

There were high fives and handshakes from Harry, who was asked if he knew what flossing was, before being given a demonstration.

The Duke reportedly also gave them some words of wisdom, telling them not play Fortnite while they’re so young.

After waving goodbye to the children, the Duke and Duchess were given a tour of the Royal Pavilion.

The iconic building dates back to the mid-1780s and was built by George, Prince of Wales, who later became the Prince Regent and then King George IV.

The royal couple then met with people and staff at the Survivors’ Network, a charity that supports survivors of sexual violence and abuse in Sussex.

Their final stop of the day was further east, in Peacehaven, where they sat down to chat with youngsters at the JOFF Youth Centre, to hear their strategic plans and priorities around mental health and emotional wellbeing.
