The Duke and Duchess of Sussex honoured Harry's mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, by addressing the names of her family in their official baby announcement.

The statement from the palace included the names of Diana's siblings; Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Earl Spencer. They were listed after the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, all of whom were said to be "delighted with the news".

Prince Harry has a close relationship with Diana's side to the family, with Lady Jane Fellowes giving a reading at his royal wedding to Meghan in May last year.

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was also included: "The Duchess' mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage."

In contrast, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby announcements have been more formal - William is second in line to the throne, while Prince George is third, Princess Charlotte fourth, and Prince Louis fifth.

It's believed that William and Kate have to therefore adhere to a stricter and more traditional royal protocol than Harry and Meghan, whose new son is seventh in line to the throne.

Like William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also confirmed their baby news on Instagram.

A more formal announcement was also placed outside Buckingham Palace, as happened with the births of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The official announcement to mark Prince Louis' arrival in March last year stated: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs. The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

It then added that Prince William and Kate had informed The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, along with "members of both families".

Prince Harry gave his first interview in the hours following the birth of his son, telling reporters in Windsor: "I'm very excited that Meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning, a very healthy boy.

"Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It's been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine.

"How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we are both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there."
