  • Mia Chow currently works as a flight attendant. She last remembered one of her most memorable deeds that happened during last year's winter. Mia was visiting the London Tower and saw a homeless man begging by the busy street; she instantly knew she had to do something. "When I reached into my pocket, I realised I only had 5 pounds. I wanted to get him a proper meal but all I could afford was the hotdog bun and a cup of tea from the food truck. Passing it to him and watching as he eagerly cupped his hands around the tiny, warm paper cup broke my heart. It was the only other source of warmth apart from his thin, torn blanket. I looked into his eyes when he thanked me for the food and it reminded me that regardless of whether your gesture is a big or small one, it means so much more to the person receiving help. This incident keeps me motivated to do good for people who needs help within my ability."

"He has always been my pillar of strength and voice of reason, and I wanted to thank him for all the times he’s helped me out. I saved up and bought him a flight home for Christmas." Bless her heart.

She tells Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore: "I began a journey of deep introspection, especially in the last two years having just emerged from a personal hardship. The kindest deed I have done is to prioritise myself in any endeavour I set out to do, and thus give the best version of myself to my friends and family. To know thyself is to be able to listen, accept and extend compassion to others. Sharing experiences and your time with people around you is the truest gift you can give to someone."

  • Cheryl Yao is a professional host and emcee. Together with her family, she organised a trip and went to a village in Phnom Penh where the villagers were living in dilapidated conditions. "Prior to flying, we had spent weeks gathering clothing, bags, toiletries, toys in good condition from family and friends. While we were there, we spent time with the locals, cooked a meal at the local school and donated the supplies and rations to the families. It was heart-warming to see the smiles of the villagers." And that's tourism with a conscience.

"Earlier this year, I made a new friend – he is a person with autism. I met him at a restaurant as he was struggling to clarify his order and make payment. The cashier was visibly upset with the long lines and tried to dismiss him. I stepped in to help facilitate the communication and get him his meal. He later thanked me apologetically and we sat down to have a meal together. When we parted, he said he was happy that day to have made a friend. Little did he know how humbled I was by his graciousness, lack of offence taken and openness, and that it was I who was so blessed to have made a 'friend 'that much happier that day."

SINGAPORE — Beauty with a purpose – that’s what the top 10 finalists of the 2019 Miss Universe Singapore competition are about. In a recent press conference held on Tuesday (1 October) at VUE, OUE Downtown’s newest bar and grill restaurant, a number of key announcements were also announced, alongside the reveal of the finalists.

Whipping the beauty queens into form is Jonas “Queen Maker” Antonio Gaffud. He was appointed by the New York-based Miss Universe Organization as Creative Consultant for the Miss Universe Philippines and Miss Universe Singapore brand.

Pia Wurtzbach, the most followed Miss Universe on Instagram, will be flexing her skills as a Guest Judge for the Miss Universe Singapore finals, while former 2011 Miss Universe Singapore titleholder, Valerie Lim, has been appointed as the National Director this year.

The finalists will compete on stage at Zouk Singapore on Thursday (17 October), through three rounds of competition – an elegant red carpet look, swimsuits and engaging Q&A.

At the end of the night, one candidate will earn the title of Miss Universe Singapore and will represent our country on the global stage at Miss Universe.
