McDonald’s Singapore launched a new locally-inspired menu as part of Singapore’s National Day celebrations next month, but not all customers were thrilled.

Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore went down to several McDonald’s outlets in the CBD area, including the ones at Raffles City and Plaza Singapura, during lunch time on Thursday (13 July), the first day with the new menu.

Long queues could be seen with many others stopping by to look at the new menu. Most of customers that Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore spoke to bought the new Nasi Lemak Burger, which consists of a coconut-flavoured chicken thigh patty among other ingredients.

However, the burger appeared to be more favoured by millennials as compared to members of the older generation.

University students Melody Quek and Pang Yuan Ling, both 27, queued for about 15 minutes at the Plaza Singapura outlet before they managed to get their hands on the new Nasi Lemak Burger.

Quek commented that the new burger was a “refreshing change” from the “usual items”. Other items on the menu included the Bandung McFizz, Chendol McFlurry topped with Gula Melaka sauce and Chendol Melaka Cone. Pang, who also bought the new Coconut Pie, said, “The food isn’t that bad actually, I think it has a unique taste. It’s at least better than the banana ice cream they had awhile back”.

On the other hand, consultant Samuel Hong, 52, who was having lunch with his colleagues at the outlet at SpringLeaf Tower in Tanjong Pagar, complained, “I personally don’t like it (the new burger). It lacks the original Nasi lemak taste and there isn’t even rice! I think they should just stick to the normal menu.”

Similarly, 44-year-old Wang Wei Rong, who was having lunch at the outlet in SCAPE, said, “I think the younger generation will prefer this kind of food more. Every time got new thing they will go and queue. I will just stick to my favourite Fillet O Fish”.

Others felt that the new menu was a good marketing strategy on McDonald’s part, as it might start a craze in the next few weeks.

Jerry Teo, 31, who was queueing for the Nasi Lemak burger at the Raffles City outlet for 20 minutes, said, “It’s definitely a good marketing tactic! When I heard the news yesterday, I knew I had to try it for lunch today. Hopefully it won’t disappoint me.”

A university student, who only wanted to be known as Aisyah, 21, said, “I liked how McDonald’s decided to incorporate local food into the menu for National Day. I think it makes it more relatable to customers.”
