Mayday, Eve Ai among 2017 Golden Melody Awards winners

Taiwan held its 28th annual Golden Melody Awards (GMAs) on Saturday (24 June), the most important music awards ceremony in the Chinese music industry, equivalent to the Grammys.

This year, Sangpuy Katatepan, known for performing traditional songs from his Taiwanese indigenous Puyuma tribe, nabbed the album of the year award with “Yaangad.” He also won an award for best aboriginal singer.

Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong, who has been nominated six times for best male singer (Mandarin), finally took home an award for his album “Journey To The West”.

Taiwanese singer-songwriter Eve Ai, dubbed as “Taiwan’s Adele”, won the award for best female singer (Mandarin) for her album “Talk About Eve.”

Popular Taiwanese band Mayday won the best Mandarin album award for their ninth album “History Of Tomorrow”, while their lead vocalist AShin took home the best lyricist prize. The group previously won the best group awards at the GMAs in 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2012.

Newcomers No Party For Cao Dong were the biggest winners of the night, winning not just the best new artist award, but also besting veterans to nab awards for best musical group and song of the year with their debut album “The Servile”.
