Matt Damon Hates Disco — Just Like His 'Martian' Character

The new sci-fi hit The Martian may be set in the future, but its soundtrack is decidedly retro. The film is full of disco tunes from the likes of Vickie Sue Robinson, The Hues Corporation and Donna Summer, much to the chagrin of stranded astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who can’t stand the genre (the tunes were left behind by his ‘70s-era-music-loving commander, Melissa Lewis, played by Jessica Chastain).

It’s one thing the guy has to feast on nothing but potatoes for most of the time, and you know, is cut off from direct human interaction for a year-and-a-half. It’s the disco that really drives him nuts.

Damon, as it turns out, shares in his character’s contempt for the musical style. “I’m with Mark Watney on disco, I’m not a big fan,” he told us at the film’s Toronto press day (watch above). “I could live without hearing disco ever again.”

The Martian cast as a whole is split over the genre’s appeal, though. Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis, and Donald Glover are Team Disco, while Jeff Daniels and Kate Mara join Damon on Team Disco Haters.

“The thing about disco is it’s just happy music,” Chastain says. But asked for her genre of choice, Mara fires back, “Anything but disco.” Burn.

The Martian is now in theaters.
