Keanu Reeves says 'Matrix 4' is a 'love story' and 'a call to wake up'

Keanu Reeves has revealed that The Matrix 4 is “a love story” from returning director Lana Wachowski, which will prove to be “inspiring” for audiences.

The film is currently shooting in Berlin, having resumed after a coronavirus-induced delay, and Reeves appeared on The One Show via video call to discuss the upcoming sci-fi sequel.

He admitted that things “looked a little dire for Neo” at the end of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions and dismissed the notion the movie will be a prequel, but said “all will be revealed” in the new film.

Reeves added: “We have a wonderful director, Lana Wachowski, and she has written a beautiful script that is a love story. It’s inspiring.

“It’s another version, a call to wake up and it has some great action.”

Reeves’s co-star Neil Patrick Harris has also been chatting about The Matrix 4, praising Wachowski in an interview with SiriusXM.

He said: "I think she has a great inclusive energy and her style has shifted visually from what she had done to what she is currently doing."

Harris said it was “fun for me to be able to play in the sandbox” of the movie, which he described as an “ambitious” story.

Harris’s words echo the comments Reeves has previously made about how ambitious The Matrix 4 is and how wowed he was by the script.

The Matrix 4 is due to reunite Reeves with Carrie-Anne Moss, who will again play the role of Trinity.

Other key cast members Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving have both confirmed they will not appear in the new movie.

The latter star revealed he would have been involved were it not for scheduling issues that led to the role of Agent Smith being axed.

New additions to the ensemble include Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra and Jonathan Groff.

The Matrix 4 is due to be released into cinemas in April 2022.
