10 Sep – A police station in Central, Hong Kong has denied allegations that they have given special treatment to TVB actor Mat Yeung when he appeared to report himself at the station following his previous alleged DUI.
As reported on Mingpao, speculations of such treatment sparked after more than ten uniformed and plain-clothed police officers were deployed outside the station and were seen setting up a blockade on the road to prevent members of the media from getting close as they arrived at the scene to interview Mat.
It is noted that Mat, who crashed his car on the road on his way to his studio on the 8th of last month, had declined to undergo a breathalyser test to determine if he was drunk. He also claimed that the accident occurred because he was driving while being tired, and kept mum about whether or not he was under the influence.
Less than half an hour after he entered the station, Mat was spotted leaving the area - with more policemen clearing the way for him without being surrounded by reporters.
When asked about the special treatment, the Police Public Relations Division explained, "In the afternoon of 7 September, officers of the Central Police Station discovered that several reporters were standing outside the police station on the side of the pedestrian walk for interviews. Therefore, appropriate arrangements and actions have been taken to ensure public safety and public order."
It is noted that Mat is no stranger to DUI cases. He was fined and got his license suspended in 2005 for drink-driving, and was arrested in 2006 for attacking a security guard in a night club while being drunk. The year after, he was sentenced to social service order for causing damages to a convenience store while intoxicated.
He had since changed his image, and played more cop and uniformed roles in TVB dramas in recent years - even showing his support for the Hong Kong police amid allegations of police brutality against Hong Kong protesters.
Mat will be reporting at the police station again on 30 September.
