"Mary Poppins Returns" sequel is reportedly in the works

Emily Blunt is expected to reprise her role as the titular nanny.

12 Jan – Here's some supercalifragilisticexpialidocious news for Mary Poppins fans, there just might be a third movie coming up!

Following the success of "Mary Poppins Returns", director Rob Marshall confirmed via The Sun UK that a follow-up is now in its "early stages" of development.

"It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there's a lot of great material still to mine. That's what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know," he said.

It seems that the director is determined to make full use of all the books since he claimed that "Mary Poppins" is heading in the same direction as "Star Wars" and "James Bond", that is, it has plans to expand the franchise by churning out plenty of movies.

A follow-up has been expected since the 2018 Emily Blunt-starrer, which serves as the sequel to the 1964 Julie Andrews-starring "Mary Poppins", easily made USD261.8 million worldwide on its USD130 million budget following its release in December.

It has been receiving not only positive reviews but also numerous nominations, including four at the recent 76th Golden Globe Awards.

Blunt will most likely return as the titular nanny as the actress herself mentioned in a CBS News interview last month that she loved playing the character and would definitely play it again.

There's no targeted release date for the third movie but let's hope it will not take another 54 years before it flies down onto the big screen.
