The festive season might seem like a long way off, but Starbucks has just launched its Pumpkin Spice Latte, so it’s basically December now.

To that end, M&S has announced it will be removing glitter from all wrapping paper, cards and food packaging this Christmas.

The move will make it easier for us to be eco-friendly. Glitter is a microplastic which can be harmful to the environment.

It forms part of the company’s plastic reduction plan.

Glitter has been removed on greeting cards, wrapping paper, tags, gift bags, calendars and crackers. Plus, all designs which used to feature glitter have been re-designed without it.

M&S has also pledged to remove all glitter from its year-round range of cards and wrapping paper by the end of 2020.

As well as going glitter-free, it has added very clear instructions to the back of all its Christmas wrapping paper rolls to educate people on how to recycle wrapping paper.

It has handy tips included, like how important it is to remove tape and bows.

The rules around recycling wrapping paper and cards has been a little ambiguous.

There are some simple rules to follow in order to make sure you are recycling efficiently. For example, wrapping paper should be subject to a scrunch test.

If you can scrunch the paper up into a ball, it can be recycled. Also, remove any tape or bows to the gift wrap before popping it in the recycling.

Cards are more widely recycled, however, it’s still important to make sure there’s no glitter or bows on them.

Remember to take any batteries out of musical cards, too, and you’ll be good to go.
