Margot Robbie has revealed that her new Pirates of the Caribbean movie will introduce a “lot of girl power” to the world of high sea adventure.

The 30-year-old star is attached to star in a spin-off of the main Disney franchise, penned by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson.

Robbie was asked by Collider what her film will bring to the long-running series, in an interview to promote her new movie Dreamland.

She said: “Lot of girl power. No, it’s too early to talk about it. I love Christina, obviously. I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process.

“We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”

Robbie’s movie is set to be entirely separate to the planned sixth instalment in the main franchise, which has lain dormant since the release of Salazar’s Revenge in 2017.

The future of the main chronology is still in a state of flux, likely as a result of Johnny Depp’s extensive legal wranglings with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp recently lost his libel case against The Sun newspaper and was asked to step away from his role as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise.

As far back as May, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Depp’s return to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow was not certain.

The star has played the role ever since the series began in 2003 and he has been nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and two Golden Globes for playing the swashbuckler.

Robbie has made a point of taking on roles in female-led movies in recent years, including those she has produced through her company LuckyChap Entertainment.

She plays Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe, debuting in Suicide Squad and then stepping up to the lead for Birds of Prey.

Robbie is one of few cast members from the original movie to reappear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is set to take a different and more irreverent approach to the material.

She is also developing a reboot for the cult comic book hero Tank Girl.
