Waterstones has named its book of the year 2018 as ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney.

The second novel by the Dublin-based author, ‘Normal People’ is the story of Marianne and Connell, who have a complicated friendship while growing up together in rural Ireland. In a statement, the bookseller called the title: “Achingly observed, wry and moving” and “A story that is absolutely universal to us all.”

With many of us looking for a good book to curl up with over the Christmas break, the shortlist provides ample inspiration for our reading needs.

The shortlist also includes journalist Dolly Alderton’s debut title, ‘Everything I Know About Love’, an autobiographical title celebrating the importance of friendship, and ‘Why We Get The Wrong Politicians’, a non-fiction title from the assistant editor of The Spectator.

But how many of this year’s titles have you read already? From nature poetry to an anonymous insight into the legal world, here are the rest of the shortlisted books.

  • ‘Everything I Know About Love’ by Dolly Alderton

  • ‘The Penguin Classics Book’ by Henry Eliot

  • ‘Why We Get the Wrong Politicians’ by Isabel Hardman

  • ‘The Colour of Time: A New History of the World, 1850-1960’ by Dan Jones & Marina Amaral

  • ‘Circe’ by Madeline Miller

  • ‘The Secret Barrister: Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken’ by The Secret Barrister

  • ‘I am the Seed that Grew the Tree: A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year’ selected by Fiona Waters & illustrated by Frann Preston-Gannon
