Man Utd star ready to turn back on Ten Hag and secure surprise move back to homeland
Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is being backed to secure a move elsewhere this summer regardless of whether Erik ten Hag plans to sign him to a permanent deal or not.
The towering frontman moved to Old Trafford on loan in January from Burnley, but via Besiktas, where he had also been on loan. Signed on a temporary basis and as a stop-gap for Cristiano Ronaldo, Weghorst spoke of his pride upon signing for the Red Devils.
But despite scoring one of the more inventive goals of the 2022 World Cup, Weghorst has been unable to replicate his early season form in Turkey in the Premier League.
Indeed, he scored nine goals in 18 games for the Super Lig club prior to his move to Old Trafford. However, despite earning regular selection by Ten Hag, Weghorst has just two goals in 27 appearances to date.
United boss Ten Hag is planning another big transfer spend this summer, focusing largely on bringing in a new No 9. To that end, the likes of Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Goncalo Ramos are among those to be linked.
And while the signing of a top-class marksman will leave Weghorst in the shadows, it’s claimed the club could still look to sign him as a squad player. To that end, Ten Hag clearly sees something he likes in the 30-year-old star.
Indeed, his regular selection has caused bafflement to Rio Ferdinand who has named four Man Utd stars who will be angered by Weghorst’s regular involvement.
Nonetheless, Weghorst insists he would be happy to stay if he opportunity arose and if Ten Hag made him feel wanted.
Speaking to The Times, he said recently: “If the club wants to keep me, I’ll have to know what role they have in mind for me.”
Weghorst backed to ditch Man Utd and sign for PSV
Regardless of Ten Hag’s decision on his future, Weghorst is being backed to turn down the chance to stay at United.
And Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen believes the striker will move instead to PSV Eindhoven. Playing under United great Ruud van Nistelrooy, Driessen reckons Weghorst will be appreciated far more in his homeland.
“If you want a guarantee of goals, you have to get Weghorst,” Voetbal Nieuws quote him telling the Kick Off podcast.
“You still have Luuk de Jong and then they want Lauritsen. I don’t know what will happen to De Jong then, but if you then choose a big striker who is headstrong and can achieve a lot in the sixteen, I would go for Weghorst.
“He was already almost the Netherlands’ top scorer at AZ, has become a seasoned and a regular international. I think he would not be out of place at PSV.
“I don’t know if he wants to return to the Netherlands himself. But if Feyenoord and PSV make it to the Champions League, of course it would be great to appear in it.”
Weghorst is contracted to Burnley until summer 2025, but he’s unlikely to play any part in the Clarets’ side in the Premier League.
As a result, they will be ready to move Weghorst on Transfermarkt valuing the star at a fee of around €14m.
