Manchester United have reportedly enquired about signing Brentford left-back Rico Henry as Erik ten Hag eyes cover for the injured Luke Shaw.

The manager has made signing a new left-back his transfer priority with Shaw out for several months and Tyrell Malacia also unavailable, and has a few targets on his radar at the moment.

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso have both been linked with a move to Man Utd recently, as well as Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon. Free agent Ryan Bertrand has also been discussed as another potential option.

It now seems, however, that Man Utd could make a move for Henry instead. That is according to the Daily Mailwho claim the Red Devils have ‘made checks’ into whether Brentford would be willing to sell him.

Henry has been a consistent and impressive performer for Brentford since joining from Walsall for just £1.5m in 2016.

He missed only one Premier League game last season and has started all three of Brentford’s games so far this term.

The Daily Mail also report that Henry is in contention for his first England call-up this week, after impressing Gareth Southgate when he watched Brentford against Tottenham in their season opener.

Since signing for Brentford, Henry has made 201 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and making 11 assists in the process.

A solid defender, the 26-year-old makes an average of 1.3 tackles and 1 interception per game. He can also play as a left-midfielder and can be a threat going forward, too.

With that in mind, he could prove to be a valuable addition for Man Utd, but completing a deal for Henry will not be straightforward, especially so close to the end of the transfer window.

The left-back is under contract with Brentford until 2026. It isn’t clear from the Daily Mail’s report how much the Bees would accept for Henry, but it’s likely he’ll be expensive.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Man Utd test Brentford’s resolve with an opening offer for Henry in the next few days.
