Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in the summer and have been handed a boost in their pursuit.

Guehi joined the Eagles from Chelsea for around £18million in the summer of 2021 having impressed on loan at Swansea City.

Despite joining the Blues in 2007, the young central defender could only manage two first-team appearances for the club, both of which came in the League Cup.

A case could be made that Guehi would start for Chelsea these days given their woeful form this season.

He has been very impressive for the Selhurst Park club and has captained his side several times in 2022/23 and has picked up three caps for England since moving from west to south in the capital.

Guehi’s stellar showings for Palace have caught the attention of many big clubs with a summer transfer potentially on the cards.

Multiple reports have said Arsenal are interested in signing the 22-year-old with Mikel Arteta in the market for a new defender.

It is not clear how much Palace would ask for, but Guehi definitely won’t be cheap given his importance, the fact he is an England international, and his contract, which does not expire until 2026.

Although Arsenal do need a quality right-sided centre-half, it is hard to imagine then shelling out around or over £50m to sign a defender not guaranteed a starting spot.

Guehi would walk straight into the Tottenham starting XI, and he probably would for Manchester United as well, given Raphael Varane’s inconsistency and injury issues.

And according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, both of these sides are interested in signing the former Chelsea youngster.

Aouna says Palace are ‘open to the departure’ of their centre-half after United and Spurs both made ‘enquiries’ over his availability.

It is added that Michael Olise is not expected to leave this summer as he is ‘happy and won’t force a departure’.

Both Erik ten Hag’s side and Spurs are expected to be very active in the summer transfer window.

The former are prioritising the signing of a new striker and will probably need to sell a few first-team stars to fund other deals.

A midfielder and centre-half are probably next on the agenda for Ten Hag, who spent over £200m in his first transfer window at Old Trafford, signing the likes of Antony and Casemiro.

The club’s pricey summer hindered their winter window and they were only able to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo with the loan signing of Wout Weghorst, who has failed to impress for the Red Devils.

United have been strongly linked with Napoli centre-half Kim Min-jae and it looks increasingly likely that Harry Maguire will leave in the summer.

Signed for £80m in 2019, Maguire has failed to live up to his price tag and Ten Hag’s side are expected to cut their losses at the end of the season.

ESPN say West Ham are interested in signing Guehi’s England teammate and they should have a decent summer transfer budget with Declan Rice being linked with a £92m move to Arsenal.
