According to reports, Manchester United have told West Ham United that Harry Maguire will not be leaving the club this summer.
Maguire slipped down the pecking order last season as it became clear that he is not fancied by Erik ten Hag.
The England international fell behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw in the pecking order last season and he has not made a single appearance in any of United’s first three games of the 2023/24 campaign.
The defender has been pursued by West Ham this summer and they agreed a £30m deal with Man Utd a couple of weeks ago.
This move collapsed after talks stalled but it was claimed earlier this week that West Ham are still ‘expecting’ to sign him before the transfer window closes.
But The Times are now reporting that ‘Manchester United have blocked a fresh approach for Maguire from West Ham’.
David Moyes has been ‘open to reviving’ this deal but the Hammers head coach ‘has been told that Maguire will be staying at United, who have injury problems in defence, after the player seemed to have changed his mind about a move south’. The report adds.
‘Maguire’s move to West Ham collapsed after he had talks with United about a pay-off of about £5.2million to cover a shortfall in wages.
‘West Ham offered Maguire a contract worth about £120,000 a week, which was less than the £170,000 a week he earns at United, where he has two years left on his deal.’
‘At the time, a source close to Maguire said: “Harry respects West Ham and David Moyes, but to be clear there was never an agreement in place between Harry and West Ham. The process was less advanced than portrayed in the media. For example, at no point has Harry spoken to David Moyes. Harry remains settled at United, loves the club and believes he will get plenty of opportunities to play this season.”
‘The feeling has been that Maguire, who became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined United from Leicester City in 2019, would only leave for a club that could compete for qualification to the Champions League.’
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has since added that ‘West Ham have decided to leave the race for Maguire’.
The Hammers ‘tried again’ to get Maguire but ‘no green light’ was received from Man Utd and ‘he’s no longer on the club’s list at this stage’.
