My Man, You Need Nécessaire Body Wash

Gentlemen, it is time to get serious about your body wash.

In the summertime, as the temperature rises and the humidity soaks your shirts, you begin to reach the limits of what your trusty bar of soap can handle. That beleaguered, slimy boi in your shower caddy leaves your skin dry, unless it’s a moisturizing bar, in which case you just feel slippery all day. For the problem areas, an Irish Spring does the trick, but for the rest of the body, you need something more. You want to reach for a body wash, but the men’s scents of a Dial or an Old Spice are too vague: they’re so afraid of scaring a man off with talk of floral notes that they go by Clean or Fresh or Swagger. (Or there’s Axe, which has fragrances like Phoenix or Anarchy or Dark Temptation, in case you want to smell like a Slipknot album.)

You need something more substantial. Something that gets you clean and leaves you smelling like something new, something specific. Something a little bit luxurious.

My man, you need Nécessaire Body Wash.

Nécessaire is a line of body care products launched by Nick Axelrod (co-founder of the popular Into The Gloss beauty blog and co-host of the podcast Eyewitness Beauty) and former Estée Lauder executive Randi Christiansen, with an eye toward taking body care as seriously as face care. “Nick and I really felt philosophically that skin doesn’t stop at the neck,” Christiansen told the Glossy Beauty podcast. Their products contain vitamins, acids and niacinamide, and I don’t know what those things mean either, I just know they feel good on my skin, and leave me feeling clean and moisturized. And grown up.

The experience begins before the body wash hits the skin. You pick up a bottle of Nécessaire Body Wash, and you’re like: this motherfucker feels fancy. The bottle pleasant to the touch, soft but substantial. It feels expensive. And honestly, it is; $25 is nothing to sneeze at when you can cop a $4 bottle of Axe The Forever Purge. But this body wash feels thick and velvety on the skin, never irritating. Plus a little bit goes a long way. A quick squeeze will work up a lather in your hands, or in a loofah or washcloth, so that $25 bottle is a solid investment.

And all of the smells tell you what they smell like. Sandalwood smells like sandalwood, like a thousand dollar a night hunting lodge. Eucalyptus smells like eucalyptus, like you’ve just spent a morning in some enchanted Norwegian forest. They’re goddamn delightful. And then the body wash washes off, leaving just enough of a scent behind to remind you about the strong, healthy choices you’ve made. Your smell doesn’t reach the table before you do. Someone will have to get close to really pick it up, everyone else will just react to your newfound confidence.

The bottle looks good, which is why the product has taken off on Instagram. But you know what? Sometimes those influencers know what they’re talking about. Order yourself a bottle of Nécessaire and leave Axe Freak On A Leash on the Walmart shelf.
