Manchester City have secured the signing of highly-rated Rennes winger Jeremy Doku for a fee of €60m (approx. £51.4m), according to reports.
It’s thought that Pep Guardiola sees the 21-year-old as a long-term replacement for Riyad Mahrez, who left the Cityzens for Al-Ahli in July.
Man City have had Doku on their radar for some time so Guardiola will no doubt be very pleased to get the deal over the line.
Tottenham had previously registered an interest in the winger, as well as West Ham, but it is the Premier League champions who have come out on top in the race for his signature.
The deal was confirmed by reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. On Twitter, he wrote: “Official, exclusive story confirmed. Deal signed for Jeremy Doku as new Man City player from Rennes.
“Man City offered a €60m package to the French club. Payment terms on long-term [contract] and deal sealed.”
The deal was then officially confirmed on Man City’s official website shortly after Romano’s tweet. Their statement said that Doku has penned a five-year contract with the Cityzens.
The Belgium international becomes their third signing of the transfer window, after bringing in Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea (£30m) and Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig (£77.5m).
Doku could become a big player for Man City
Doku is widely regarded as one of the best young wingers in Europe and is only expected to improve as he gains experience at the highest level.
He netted seven goals and made four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions for Rennes last season.
Doku has the ability to play on either flank, so will provide cover for the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Cole Palmer this term.
The winger has already chalked up 14 appearances for the Belgium national team. He also has Champions League experience under his belt – which will be valuable for Man City.
With the Doku deal done, Guardiola’s focus will now switch his attention to bringing in a new midfielder before the transfer window closes.
After missing out on West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, the manager is eyeing a move for Wolves centre-mid Matheus Nunes.
Recent reports claim, however, that despite Man City reaching an agreement on personal terms with Nunes, Wolves have rejected their latest bid of £47m.
As a result, the Cityzens are likely to walk away from the negotiations and pursue alternative midfield targets instead.
