Google paid tribute to the late Malaysian artiste P Ramlee on his 88th birthday with a sketch of him featured on Google’s Malaysia’s homepage.

The Google Doodle showed P Ramlee with his iconic thin mustache and clad in a checkered suit, seated in a director’s chair with a sheet of paper in one hand and a loudhailer in the other. A guitar was depicted behind him, paying tribute to his significant career as an actor, director, writer and composer with over 60 films and 250 song compositions.

Born Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Putih on 22 March 1929, P Ramlee made his acting debut in Singapore in 1948 before returning to Malaysia in 1964.

He died on 29 May 1973 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 44, but continued to receive posthumous awards and commemorations in Malaysia. Halls, museums and other buildings in Malaysia have been named after him, years after his death.

“Born 88 years ago today, P Ramlee’s artistic achievements left a permanent mark on the cultural history of Malaysia,” read the blurb on the Google Doodle site. “Today’s Doodle highlights the Malaysian legend’s diverse artistry and shows him as people best remember him — sporting a thin mustache and a checkered suit, his head cocked slightly to the side.”
