Madonna is "Taking Flight" with new directing gig

Ballerina Michaela DePrince's biopic will be Madonna's third outing as a director

Madonna is set to direct the biographical movie of ballerina Michaela DePrince.

14 Mar – Grammy award-winning singer Madonna will be on directing duty once again as she is set to helm "Taking Flight", a biopic about Sierra Leonean ballerina Michaela DePrince.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios announced on their official website that the Queen of Pop will be adapting DePrince's memoir, "Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina", which she co-wrote with her foster mother, Elaine DePrince.

"There is no director better suited to tell Michaela's journey with passion and sensitivity, and we cannot wait to bring this film to audiences all around the world," said President of MGM Motion Picture Group, Jonathan Glickman, in regards to Madonna taking on the directing role.

"Fresh off the Boat" writer Camilla Blackett will pen the screenplay. It follows DePrince's life as an orphan in Sierra Leone during times of war as she overcomes great odds to become a world-famous ballet dancer.

Prior to this, Madonna has directed two projects in the past, her first movie being 2008's "Filth and Wisdom", followed by "W.E." in 2011.

Madonna's other upcoming movie project is "Loved", an adaptation of Andrew Sean Greer's novel "The Impossible Lives of Greta Walls", in which she co-writes and directs as reported in an interview by Harper's Bazaar in 2017.
