Mabel Cheung suspends documentary screening amid controversy
7 Feb – Mabel Cheung's film, "To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self" has suspended all screenings following criticisms from some of the students featured in the documentary.
As reported on Mingpao, the documentary, which has been in the works for over a decade and follows six secondary school students throughout that time, was in trouble after one of the six stated that she did not consent to the public screening of the film and was opposed to it being showcased at film festivals.
The said student, Ling, stated that she thought that the documentary was only an internal project for her school, which also turns out to be Mabel's alma mater.
Another girl also stated that she is unsatisfied with the filmmaking process and that she has not watched the final cut.
On the other hand, Mabel stated that she was the one who proposed for the movie to suspend all screenings, saying that she will take responsibility for any misunderstandings.
"I hope that we will be able to communicate and that there will be a glimmer of light soon," she added.
She stated that all parties had already signed the consent forms prior to filming, and that while it was not known at the time whether it would be released to the public, the agreement did state that it could be screened in theatres or different media.
