M.I.A. announces mysterious new project

The British singer-songwriter has been relatively quiet since the release of her fifth and purportedly final studio album, "AIM," in 2016.

M.I.A. recently turned to social media to tease what appears to be new music material, promising her fans that she will spend the "new decade" "exploring planets and platforms."

The announcement arrived alongside an astrology-inspired visual and its accompanying new tune, in which the "Paper Planes" vocalist pays homage to her Sri Lankan roots.

Although details about the mysterious project are still scarce to this date, M.I.A. teased that it will arrive as soon as Friday, January 31.

The musician-turned-social-activist retired from music back in 2018, following the release of her much buzzed-about "MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A." documentary.

"I want to [retire], and I have said I am. And, yes, that is as much as I have to say. And it's time for new people to come through, but that's very difficult. It's a very difficult thing. Because actually I think it's harder now than it was for me 15 years ago, which is crazy. It's really nuts," she told Rolling Stones at the time.

Last June, M.I.A. was named Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her contribution to the arts, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours. She then received the prestigious MBE award from Prince William earlier this January.

At the time, the British musician revealed that her mother and cousin, who came to England in 1986 as refugees from Sri Lanka, have both been responsible for stitching the awards over the past three decades.

"Today I'm accepting this in honour of my mother who worked for minimum wage to give us a better life. As a working class first generation immigrant it's great to be recognised for my contribution. Having freedom to speak my truth and to do it through music has helped me speak for those who do not have those privileges. I will continue fight for those who are silenced or persecuted by others," she added in a statement.
