Lucy Hale finds stepping into the costumes for her new show Katy Keene helps her become the character.
In the Riverdale spin-off series, the Pretty Little Liars actress plays aspiring fashion designer Katy Keene, who can usually be seen wearing red, pink, sequins, heart patterns, skirts, and heels.
Keene’s wardrobe is far removed from Hale’s own style, so getting into costume while filming the musical-comedy helps the star get into the right mindset.
“I feel like your wardrobe and how you dress every day says so much about who you are, so stepping into Katy’s clothes helps me become her,” she told U.S. InStyle magazine. “Once you watch the show, you see her personality, you see the clothes, and you're like, ‘That makes so much sense.’
“I love pink, but I don't wear a lot of it. I'm way more casual, way more laidback, and I probably never wear heels, whereas Katy is always in a skirt and heels, just running around the city. Every time we're filming outside, I'm literally the only one wearing pink, while everyone's in a black trench coat and flats.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the 30-year-old admitted she was very hard on herself in her twenties and let other people’s negative opinions get to her, but now she accepts her body.
“In my early twenties, late teens, oh my God — I was just so hard on myself. The way I looked, how much I weighed, the food I was eating, my skin, anything. And I think that's normal,” Lucy confessed. “But it is nice to be of an age where I'm accepting of the body I'm in, and I'm accepting of myself, and I love myself, you know? Like, it takes a while to get to this point where you're like, ‘Oh my God — I actually like who I am."
