16 May – While most mothers would rate their children's achievement high, Silvia Mak recently revealed that she would only give her daughter Louisa Mak seven or eight marks out of ten despite her achievement in academics.
In an interview with Mingpao recently, Silvia - a paediatric occupational therapist by profession - shared that she will not just "score" Louisa for her academic excellence, but her emotional needs as well.
"I think her current life is quite stressful. This is not good in the long run. I would sometimes talk to her and help her relieve the stress. I asked her to lower her expectations first."
Said Louisa, her mother is more or less a shelter for her.
"It's like, no matter what happens in my life, she will always be there to support me and care for me. Even as a child, my mother told me that the most important thing for a person is to be happy," she said.
On the other hand, when asked if she is upset that her daughter chose to be in showbiz rather than become a lawyer as she should, Silvia stated that she is not opposed to any of Louisa's choices.
"I just told her to think clearly and to be careful. I just think that the entertainment industry is very complicated," she said.
Louisa laughed and said that her mother was actually very concerned about her choice to join showbiz.
As to the changes she has seen in Louisa after three years in the industry, Silvia said that she can see the pressure her daughter faces.
"I hope she will not get affected by the criticisms on the internet, to remain an open mind and learn from it," she added.
