Logan director tells us why Wolverine’s costume has never been used

if you’ve read the comics, you’ll know that Wolverine typically wears a brown and tan or a blue and cold costume. He’s switched back and forth since making his debut back in 1974, somehow managing not to look utterly ridiculous.

Unsurprisingly, neither costume has ever been used in the X-Men or Wolverine movies, while Hugh Jackman has never worn a mask either. The closest we’ve gotten is a deleted scene in The Wolverine where Logan (Hugh Jackman) receives the costume as a parting gift from Mariko.

It’s been a sticking point for certain fans who long for a portrayal of Wolverine that’s more, well, faithful to the comics. Logan and The Wolverine director James Mangold told Screenrant that there’s a perfectly good explanation why their wish has never been granted:

“But the biggest block I’ve had – I’m willing to take the heat for it – is that, I can never get past, being a writer for these movies as well, that Logan is the least narcissistic of all the superheroes, any kind I can think of – Marvel, DC or anywhere else. What I mean by that is, who puts a special branded outfit on when they do good deeds? And why? The only reason you do it is so you can have some sort of trademarked claim and get credit for what you did.

Nothing seems less Wolverine-like than the desire to put on a trademarked outfit, particularly canary yellow, and kind of prance about doing good deeds and have people go, ‘Oh my God! It’s The Wolverine!’ At least the Wolverine, as I see him, that’s a real struggle for me and always has been. I somehow feel that if somehow we ever put Hugh [Jackman] into one of those outfits, people would not be happy. Essentially, it’s something that lives on the page and I’m not sure could live anywhere else.”

If you harken back to 2000 when the first X-Men movie came out, there was a similar outcry over the fact that the mutants wore black leather costumes rather than their yellow costumes from the comics.

17 years on, it’s clear that most fans are mature enough to know that what works in one media doesn’t necessarily work in another. Just imagine if X-Men had stayed true to the comics costumes – comic book movies might just have sunk out of sight.

The Logan Singapore release date has been set for March 2.
