Lizzo believes her music career took off once she started thinking positively about herself.
The 31-year-old has been vocal about her continuing journey to self-acceptance and is a champion for body positivity.
Lizzo had released two albums - Lizzobangers and Big Grrrl Small World - and despite their critical acclaim, she was not well known until she released her party anthem Juice last year, which was the lead single from her hit third album, Cuz I Love You.
In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the singer added that her success has come from a positive mindset and refusing to think negatively.
Lizzo shared her mantra: "I love you...You are beautiful... And you can do anything," and revealed that she regularly tells herself her career has taken off because of talent and hard work.
She has been open about her struggles to fully accept her plus-sized figure but said she's finally starting to dispel criticism about her body.
"It's not something that you really change; it's something that you address and work on," she said of her self-confidence. "I had to address every layer of insecurity, 'cause I can't just be like, 'Alright, my arm's not jiggly and lumpy anymore.' That's delusional. You have to be like, 'That's not ugly to me anymore. and it's not wrong to me, it's beautiful to me.'"
And she hopes there are more artists like her that will be inspired to release music and put themselves out there.
"Hopefully by existing, there can just be more opportunities for people that look like me that are, you know, beyond what a trend is. And that they're there on the merit of their talent. They're there on the merit of their beauty. And they're there because they're good enough," Lizzo shared.
