Liverpool are trying to ruin the plans of Manchester United by getting to a highly rated sporting director first, although there are concerns he has already chosen to go to elsewhere.

Liverpool enjoyed a brilliant spell while Michael Edwards was their sporting director. The transfer specialist worked alongside Jurgen Klopp and helped the Reds complete some fantastic deals.

Edwards was pivotal in Liverpool signing top stars such as Mo Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho. But he also made the club a lot of money by selling unwanted players such as Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke and Danny Ward for more than they were actually worth.

Edwards left Liverpool disappointed by revealing he would step down from his role at Anfield in summer 2022. His number two, Julian Ward, then took over.

However, Ward will only be Liverpool’s sporting director for a year as he has also informed the club of his desire to leave this summer.

This has put Liverpool in the market for a new transfer chief. They have been heavily linked with Wolfsburg’s Jorg Schmadtke, although a top-class alternative has now emerged in the form of Napoli director of football Cristiano Giuntoli.

The Italian is set to depart Napoli following their first Serie A title in 33 years. On Wednesday,  Man Utd were tipped to move in for him. Fellow Premier League clubs Tottenham and Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Giuntoli, having been impressed by his work at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has written about Giuntoli’s situation on his website. Pedulla reveals Liverpool have been attempting to hijack Man Utd’s move for Giuntoli by ‘pressing’ to try and land him themselves.

Liverpool, Man Utd may both miss out on transfer expert

Liverpool have been doing this ‘silently’, which presumably means without much fanfare or media coverage.

Liverpool managing to bring in Giuntoli could have given them a big helping hand in the pursuits of Kim Min-jae and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who have been two of Napoli’s best players alongside Victor Osimhen this season.

Unfortunately for Klopp, it does not look like Liverpool will be winning the race for the Napoli mastermind, despite their attempts.

Pedulla explains how it is Juventus who are poised to snare Giuntoli. He has ‘chosen’ to join Napoli’s Italian rivals, even though this will result in hatred from fans of his current club.

Juve just need to sort out a deal with Napoli before Giuntoli’s switch to Turin can be confirmed.

If Giuntoli does indeed go ahead with this Juve move, then Liverpool will likely put all of their attention towards alternative target Schmadtke.

Meanwhile, a Tottenham insider has revealed a major transfer miss from the club which allowed Liverpool to benefit.
