Lightsaber Surprise: Mark Hamill Reunites With Real ‘Return of the Jedi’ Prop (Video)

Fans were left hanging at the end of “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” as Rey hands Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, his old lightsaber. But that’s not the only reunion he’s had with his classic weapon.

Hamill got his hands on the original prop lightsaber he used in “Return of the Jedi” as part of an upcoming episode of his YouTube show “Mark Hamill’s Pop Culture Quest.”

“I haven’t seen this thing in years,” an astonished Hamill says in the video (above).

Brandon Alinger of Prop Store LA brought the original movie prop from his personal collection to Hamill’s show. And the two chatted about how Lucas incorporated it into shooting.

It was vintage movie magic.

“It was just like they did the effects in ‘I Dream of Genie’ or whatever. Boink! And it pops in,” Hamill explained.

The motorized special effects prop was also the very same one used by Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, in “A New Hope.”

Hamill has been in the news a lot lately: First, in paying tribute to his passed co-star Carrie Fisher, but also in non-Star Wars related news as he blasted Donald Trump’s cabinet appointments and read aloud Trump’s tweets in the voice of The Joker, who he played in “Batman: The Animated Series.”

Hamill should have a much larger role in “Episode VIII” after spending the entire seventh film on the sideline. The film is directed by Rian Johnson and hits theaters December 15, 2017.
