Liberty launches £8 face masks made from the brand’s iconic fabrics

If you told us last year that face masks would be SS20’s hottest accessory, we wouldn’t have believed you.
From 15 June, face masks were made compulsory - for all except children under two and those with respiratory issues - on public transport in England in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Prior to that, many members of the public opted to wear masks and coverings while food shopping and in other public spaces where maintaining a 2-metre distance wasn’t always possible.
For that reason, there’s been a sudden demand for face masks and coverings. Numerous high street retailers, including Anthropologie and Mango, have launched their own designs - John Lewis even stocks a ‘make your own’ kit.
Plus, the UK’s first face mask vending machine opened up in London this week.
Some masks have been fairly basic while others have taken a more fashion-forward approach. Cue, Liberty.
The capital’s historic department store Liberty London has today launched its own £8 designs, featuring a selection of the brand’s iconic prints.
The masks, which come in packs of five and are designed using a selection of Liberty’s own fabric line, don’t just look pretty - they’re also formulated with a trio of specially-treated layers.
The three-layered approach is common on any good face mask, and it’s something to look out for on whatever design you go for, Liberty or not.
The first layer is the patterned fabric itself, designed to be water-repellant and breathable.
The second provides wearers with an internal filter to stop any droplets transferring into the atmosphere when the wearer breathes out.
The final layer, which is nearest to the mouth, has an anti-bacterial treatment applied to it, making it odourless for hours of use.
They come in a pack of five randomly assorted prints for £40. These masks retain their “specialist treatments” for up to 20 washes each.

The styles have been designed in-house by the Liberty team and also in Italy where 100% Tana Lawn cotton has been used to create each face covering.
For each pack sold, Liberty London is donating one face mask to a charity via the department store’s Liberty, For Life Programme.
This year, the programme is working with 1000 women, an initiative to carry those women freed from slavery in the UK through to the next stage of their live and the House of St Barnabas, a private members club in Soho whose employment academy aims to break the cycle of homelessness.
