Li Ronghao re-enacted blindfold scene from MV at his Singapore concert

SINGAPORE – Mando-pop singer-songwriter Li Ronghao re-enacted a memorable music video scene when he performed at his concert in the Singapore Indoor Stadium last Saturday (19 October). After blindfolding himself during his hit song Ear (耳朵), he played on a piano and sang about the silence that greeted his ears in an empty corridor.

Ronghao, who was previously in Singapore for a concert in May 2017, was performing here as part of his “If I Were Young” world tour, the same title as the hit song in his fifth album Ear.

Opening the concert with En (嗯) in a dazzling neon green suit as he strummed his electric guitar, the singer would go on to wear three more outfits during his performance in shades of red, grey and black.

He entertained his audience with an unpretentious and dry sense of humour like an old friend.

To laughter from his fans, the 34-year-old revealed that he has been taking English classes because he “got triggered when he spoke to English-speaking people”.

His repertoire of songs connect with his fans as they focus on the virtues of love, loyalty and friendship, accompanied with the screening of video clips on stage. He also belted out songs from his past albums including Stubborn Love (不将就), King of Comedy (喜剧之王), Quarrelsome Lovers (王牌冤家) and Old Street (老街).

At one stage, he admitted that his large consumption of delicious salted fish skin in Singapore was causing him to suffer from a bout of phlegm in his throat. “I like Singapore’s food so much I am going to stay here for a while. My flight is at 4pm tomorrow but I have changed it to 5pm”, drawing laughter from the audience.

He teased a member of the audience for cheering him, claiming that she had disrupted his train of thoughts, and that he was getting on in age.

He continued to croon more of his hit songs including Quit Smoking (戒烟), Model (模特), Unsuited (不搭), MaMa & PaPa (爸爸妈妈) and If I Were Young (年少有为) before closing the concert to the shower of confetti and singing his debut song, Li Bai (李白), named after the famous poet from Tang Dynasty.

And how was the overall reception from the fans to his concert lasting almost three hours?

It can be summed up in a joke when he put on a faux serious look. “You guys have changed. You guys were not so ‘high’ the last time, but today, you all are so exceptionally ‘high’ that this is too much.”
