Leonardo DiCaprio set to play Elvis’s producer in upcoming biopic

Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to play the producer of rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis, it’s been revealed.

According to Variety, Paramount has secured the rights to the biography ‘Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll’, which they plan to bring to the big screen.

Significantly though, DiCaprio is reported to be attached to both produce and star in the movie. There are, however, a number of producers joining the project, including Mick Jagger, who will bring the Peter Guralnick book to cinemas.

Philips was a producer and music pioneer during the 1950s, helping to launch the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. He was the founder of Memphis-based Sun Records back in 1952 as well as Sun Studios where Elvis recorded his very early work.

The reveal comes as quite contrasting news to last week when it was reported that DiCaprio was in the process of bringing ‘Captain Planet’ to the big screen, which no doubt got many children of the ‘80s excited and even more post-80s kids left confused.

The Oscar-winner (for ‘The Revenant’) has had an eclectic career and has previously played real-life people in the likes of ‘Catch Me if You Can’ and in the epic Howard Hughes biography ‘The Aviator’.

As it stands there’s no writer attached yet, with the project being in its very early stages. Whether it’ll be the type of thing to get the Academy’s attention in regards to a DiCaprio performance, we’ll just have to wait and see.
